Discover Your Big Idea
I think everyone reading this right now has a Big Idea. It’s in your mind somewhere. Discovering the Big Idea is where things get challenging…First, you must realize what it is — and then second, do something with it.
As many of you know, I’ve been on a journey this past month — sharing short videos and content to LinkedIn and Instagram. I don’t have a map or blueprint for my Big Idea — but am leaving breadcrumbs along the path and figuring it out as I go. We’ll see happens. Regardless — I’m truly grateful for your support and engagement, and am stoked that you are here to follow along my journey.
Welcome to my first blog post.
Something has shifted.
People are keen to hear what I have to say, and they seem drawn to how I am saying it (90 second iPhone videos).
What started out as a Video plea to people looking to break into Medical Devices has blossomed into something more. I’m sharing my story, and people seem to enjoy listening. People are perhaps even learning. Which is pretty cool.
Last week, I had a LinkedIn post hit 25,000 views in 5 days.
That’s equal parts crazy and exciting. The power and reach of these social channels truly boggles the mind. And even though I’m not sure of the destination — I will continue to enjoy the journey of sharing my story, and helping others.
Sage Advice
A good friend & successful entrepreneur, Evan Loomis recently told me “soon you will understand your ‘Big Idea.’
“It will come to you…” he said.
His advice was to keep putting out the video content, but also start working on some written content as well. And that I will want both.
Hmm. Written content? Like a blog?
“Yes. At first. Then maybe a book.”
So I sat down and wrote a quick poem, about written words.
Write it down.
Ink forces you to be succinct.
To have a solid point and plan.
To blend thoughts with instinct.
A vision that’s easy to understand.
My friend Evan — co-founder of ICON and author of one of Harvard Business Reviews best selling books, “Get Backed” — went on to further explain why I should focus my energy on writing, that it will reinforce the message and create a more lasting satiety to others.
Evan has a unique way of understanding people, and an innovative and creative take on how we consume information. He has categorized the mediums of communication as different meal types — which I’ll do my best to summarize below:
- Videos — Appetizers. Snacks.
- Blog post — Brunch.
- Podcast — Quick Lunch (on the go)
- Book — Steak Dinner.
While I would love to serve everyone steak, to this point — all I have served have been snacks. Some better than others.
Anyway, for those few of you still reading — I hope you have enjoyed this brunch AKA my first blog post. Like most brunches, this blog post would have been better with a mimosa or Irish coffee.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Pass the Baileys.
